What to Wear to Your Summer Senior Photo Session - Bellingham, Wash.

The long happy days of Summer are full of fun and magical warm and golden light.

There isn’t much rain in the forecast making it a perfect season for booking an on-location photo session. My hope is that after reading this post you’ll have a plan for what to wear to your summer photoshoot.

#1 My Tips for Masculine Looks

It’s important to find a balance between practical and polished.

Summer is hot so you’ll want to pick something that won’t have you sweating more then necessary but you also don’t want to choose something if there is a more polished option. For the most part, I’d recommend to stay away from tank tops.

T-shirts are casual and can look nice when they’re high quality. I recommend something like these Fresh Clean Tees that wrap nicely around the biceps but don’t hug your belly button too snugly. They’re also logo and graphic free which will help give them a sharp timeless look.

Short-sleeve button ups and three-quarter sleeve linen shirts are also both handsome and practical choices for the weather.

Avoid bottoms that have bulky zippers and pocket flaps. So please no cargo shorts.

#2 My Tips for Feminine Looks

💃 Dresses, jumpsuits and two-pieces oh my! Summer provides some much versatility to show off your personal style and beauty.

Let’s talk dresses

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to find a beautiful summer dress. And sometimes you don’t have to spend anything extra at all! Do a dive into your closet and try the dresses you already have too.

I personally love summer dresses with texture and details, such as a lacey dress as featured in this photo above.

To make the right choice for you play to your strongest features.

If you love your boobies choose something with a sweetheart, v-neck, or off-shoulder neckline.

If you love your gorgeous legs choose a slit or shorter length. (Do try for something longer than a cocktail dress length so you don’t restrict yourself when posing.)

Long sleeves make seem counter-intuitive on hot days, but long billowing sleeves are glamorous and can be better than a tight-fitting option.

Jumpsuits

I love me a solid jumpsuit! If you plan on wearing a jumpsuit make sure it isn’t too loose so you don’t get lost in one that is too baggy. Wearing your correct size is key to ensuring you look your best.

Don’t Forget About Two-pieces

A crop top with a matching or complimenting high-wasted bottom is also a beautiful outfit choice. Showing your midriff and accentuating your hour-glass figure will have you feeling powerful and beautiful.

I still remember going to my high school reunion a year after having my baby. Wearing a white long-sleeve crop top and a pair of high-wasted light wash jeans had me feeling confident in my post-partum body without sacrificing my style. So that’s why two-pieces are on my list of ideas for you to consider.

#3 General Tips

  • Solid colors and neutral tones are the best way to ensure your face and expression are the feature of your photos.

  • Select prints and patterns if you want to make a bold or lively statement full of your personality.

  • Take advantage of the warm weather and wear any staple pieces of jewelry like an heirloom necklace or watch. Because you won’t be wearing a jacket these things won’t be covered up.

  • Choose something you feel proud in and also comfortable in.

  • Correct size matters. Wearing something too big or small can look odd on camera.

  • Casual shoes are okay. But don’t wear your garden sneakers or shoes that have lots of wear and tear.

  • Avoid logos and graphics.

  • Brining an alternative top or outfit will serve you well in the case of any last minute spills or accidents.

#4 Plan Ahead

The convenience of two-day shipping is amazing. But if you plan on purchasing something new for your session, don’t wait to order something till the last minute.

You’ll want to make sure to give yourself time to do a mirror check and find something else if it doesn’t fit or maybe doesn’t suit your style.

If you think there is something in your closet that will work, try it on once you book to confirm that you are happy with your outfit choice.

Don’t forget to put on your shoes or sandals and even sunglasses to make sure you feel beautiful and confident in the complete ensemble.
