What You Need to Know About Family Photo Sessions with Evelyn Mae Photography

Bellingham Portrait Photographer

How to Get Started

1)You can book a family session on my website here.
If you don't see a date that works for your schedule you can contact me with a special request.
2) Where Family Photos Are Taken:
My go-to outdoor location for family sessions is currently at Hovander Homestead Park in Ferndale, WA. For in-studio photos I currently shoot at Vine Creative Space NW located in Lynden.
3) What You Wear Doesn't Have To Be Complicated

  • Avoid being matchy-matchy. The days of wearing all white with jeans is a thing of the past.

    1. Fancy or casual is your choice. Just be consistent with each family member’s outfit.

    2. Color- keep it simple. Stick with two colors paired with neutrals.

    3. Read my full What-To-Wear-Guide here.

4) Kids Will Be Kids and That’s Ok

A common misconception is that in order to have a successful family session, kids have to behave like adults and look forward and smile the entire time. A part of the fun of family portraits is being playful and silly. Something I love about being a portrait photographer is capturing people’s personalities and their relationships with the ones they love. Letting kids be kids honors their personality AND represents how your family truly is.

Sometimes kids have a hard time managing their big emotions like anger and sadness. (Adults too!) And it’s okay to take breaks to help kids get back to their happy and silly selves.
5) I Take Time To Pose Each Family Member Together in Pairs

In addition to taking photos of the entire family together, I pair each family member together. For example, a mother with each child individually. And each sibling with each sibling.

Why? Each individual relationship is unique and special and also deserves to be celebrated. Just imagine 20 or 30 years in the future, how much your kids will treasure their childhood photo with just their brother or sister? Or with just mom or just dad.
6) Plan For About An Hour

Trust me, you'd be surprised how fast your photo session goes! Depending on the age of your kids, about one hour may sound like way too long to have them participate. But on the contrary it will allow time to make sure I capture a classic composition of everyone looking into the camera smiling as well as being playful and silly. It also gives time for breaks that kiddos may require.
