Facing Unpredictable Weather On Photo Day

FAQ

The Pacific Northwest is known for its stunning landscapes—but also for its unpredictable weather, especially during the fall and spring. Rain showers can come and go with little warning, and snowfall can vary drastically from one location to another.

I’ll never forget when my high school tennis match was relocated from Snoqualmie to Seattle—just 25 miles apart. Our home court was covered in layer of snow, while the Seattle court was dry under a beautiful partly cloudy sky.

Here in Whatcom County, snow fall city to city or even in the same school district can vary drastically. When planning your photo session, thinking about this ahead of time will help you have a stress-free experience.

Rain Watch

If the plan is to have an outdoor photo session and the rain forecast just won’t budge what I usually do is stay in close contact with clients right up to the hour of the photo session. I’ll arrive on-site 30 minutes early and give clients the final call. If it’s raining then, I’ll arrange to reschedule unless clients want to embrace the elements. So far in my 7+ years I have miraculously experienced breaks in rain just in time for photos.

In-Studio is Fullproof

Well, almost. If snow and ice are covering the roads we’ll need to reschedule. Otherwise a in-studio photo day will allow us to keep the appointment regardless if a weather app is showing rain icons for days—or even fluctuating by the hour. This eliminates the uncertainty of the weather while ensuring you stay dry and comfortable. Plus, indoor portraits offer stunning, professional results without compromising on quality.

Embrace the Elements

If you’re up for an adventure, let’s take photos in the rain or snow! The key is to dress appropriately so you can stay comfortable while looking stylish.

  • Outerwear matters. Your coat or jacket will be a focal point, so choose one that’s both functional and flattering. Since you’ll likely keep it on throughout the session, make sure it complements your outfit.

  • Footwear is essential. Waterproof—not just water-resistant—shoes are a must. For kids, rain boots in bright colors can add a playful touch to the photos.

  • Coordinate your outfit. Once you’ve chosen your coat and shoes, make sure your pants, skirt, or accessories complete the look. Try on the entire outfit beforehand to ensure everything works well together.

  • Use a clear umbrella. I have several clear umbrellas with white handles available to keep the rain off your face while maintaining a beautiful aesthetic. Let me know if you’d like me to bring one!

Plan for the Dry Season

If neither an in-studio session nor a rainy-day shoot sounds appealing, consider scheduling your photos for a drier time of year. In the Pacific Northwest, July and August typically offer the best chances for clear skies, giving you more flexibility in your wardrobe choices and location options.
