Build a Family Tradition: Send Your Family Photo for Your Favorite Holiday

Set Yourself Apart

A very common practice is to send out Christmas greeting cards with a photo of your family from that year. But not everyone celebrates Christmas. And for some of us, we are procrastinators and before we know it it is too late to mail out cards in time for Christmas Day.

An important piece of advice that I have been trying to take to heart is that you can do anything you want to. You do not have to do what everyone else is doing. You do not have to follow imaginary expectations that you put on yourself.

Now while this advice doesn’t apply to absolutely everything, it is a point that has me reevaluating things I do, and has me thinking about how I want to do things differently for me and my young family.

So something that I started doing is sending out a Happy New Year’s card with my family photo. For 2021 I didn’t even use a polished studio photo, but a phone selfie! It was a special photo for us because it was taken during a white Christmas – the first white Christmas my toddler experienced! I feel like it is something fun and different to set us apart from other holiday cards our friends and family receive.
And the thing about saying “Happy New Year” To someone is that you don’t have really say it on New Year’s day. The days between Christmas and Year’s Day I’m usually not doing much, and it is a convenient time for me to do a task like ordering cards and stuffing envelopes. Totally doable for a mini project, and have it done in time for people to receive the cards within the first week of the new year.

Get Creative and Create Joy

Plus, there are so many other holidays than Christmas to choose from! How cute would it be to send out Valentine’s Day cards featuring a recent photo of your kids.

How surprised and delighted would your friends be to get a “Happy National Ice Cream Day!” card in July? To do this all you would need to do is enjoy an ice cream treat towards the end of your family photo session to create the perfect feature image for that card.

A lot of us don’t get much mail that makes us smile anymore. I haven’t written and sent a paper letter in years! I know my mailbox is usually one of two things: bills or junk mail.
Choosing a holiday other than Christmas to send out a family photo is unique and creative. It’ll probably bring so much joy to an otherwise boring mailbox for your friends and family.

What Portrait Photography Means To Me

The tagline you will see throughout my website is this: “Capture The Moments You’ll Love Forever.”
I love portrait photography because it captures a special moment in someone’s life. Photo sessions are more than just a to do item for your family or to keep your profile photo up to date.
Having your portrait professionally taken is a special way to celebrate and commemorate a moment in time with the people that you love. It is a special way to celebrate milestones and achievements.
A common question in a typical ice breaker game is: if everyone is safe, what is one item you would save from your home if it was on fire? For me it would be to save my family photos collected over the years. I do not have a more precious item than my family photos. They are irreplaceable and one of a kind.

Don’t Forget To Keep a Copy For Yourself

So ordering holiday cards to share an annual family photo is one way to celebrate and honor a year in the life.
If you aren’t already, make sure to keep a copy of your holiday card too! Just think about how in 10, 20 and 30 years from now you will have such an amazing collection of cards to look back on. It’s just like planting a tree. They say the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time to plant a tree is today.
